64-BIT Controllers are four times faster

The latest additions to Osai's 10-Series family of CNC controllers are both simpler and four times faster than other models in the range, without sacrificing any of the powerful range of features associated with the range.

This has been achieved by the introduction of 64-bit microprocessors in the new 10/585 and 10/565 models, which both have wide application for machine tools for both the metalworking and woodworking industries as well as in other areas such as glass and stone.

Both models have been able to eliminate hardware such as special Ethernet, service or PLC cards and feature a higher integration of components into fewer electronic boards.

The controllers use polynomial interpolation algorithms for high speed machining, mathematical concepts that are usually only applied to tool path geometry, but have now been extended and applied to the dynamic movements. This has had the effect of giving high-speed cutting with a finish significantly closer to the mathematical model, resulting in both productivity and quality improvements.

The 10/585 has the ability to control up to 32 digital axes (24 analogue) and 24 independent and simultaneous processes. Its CPU incorporates a 133 MHz processor, a 800 MB hard disk, 1 MB of RAM and Ethernet, I/O, Keyboard, Video and FDU interfaces as standard. The 10/656 has a similar specification, with four process capability. Both have five free slots for customising, two RS232 serial ports and a programmable RS 232/422/485 port.

"These are the first in a new generation of Osai controllers," says Duncan Hudson, General Manager of OSAI-UK. "We can achieve speeds and finish that were inconceivable just a short time ago, particularly when the controllers are used in conjunction with our DAC and DSC drives and brushless motors, using the SERCOS digital linking."

Standard INTERBUS communications provide the facility for distributed I/O modules for field management. Highly configurable basic I/O modules, available for 2 to 16 points, optimises the total I/O by allowing it to be positioned near to actuators to simplify machine wiring.

On top of these innovative features, the 10/585 and 10/565 models incorporate all of the features of the 10-Series range including hardware architecture based on a standard PC and object-oriented software. The latter allows ease of customisation, making each operator interface easy to use and relevant to the application.

The new models are available with the Ethernet communication channel integrated into the CNC as well as into the WinLink operator panel. Program and data transfer between the CNC and network connected PCs, as well as trouble-shooting and monitoring of machine condition, are simplified by the bi-directional mini-DNC and standard integrated client-server functionality.
